sql querying problem

Hello Friends,

When i run below query result comes deadly slow.
why its happening?
and all other single queries are running fine.
can u tell where is the problem
where i m going wrong.

i m using
mysql v2.51
Apache/2.0.45 (Win32) Server

php 4

select distinct books.bid from books,author,authorc ,title where
( books.bid=authorc.bid and authorc.auid=author.id and (author.au_name like'%marketing%' OR author.au_name like'%information%'))
OR
(title.id=books.fktitleid and (title.title like'%marketing%' OR title.title like'%information%'))
OR
(books.keyword like'%marketing%' OR books.keyword like'%information%') ;

Like comparing slows it down, one solution for that could be somekind of indexing by category etc. or only one like comparing max. See mysql manual for SELECT ... LIKE.

should i increase buffer size in mysql cnf file??
will it help me or not?

I don't know about that, but I suggest you rethink and rebuild your whole table structure. There is an other choice to use MATCH('string') AGAINST(colum1,colum2,colum3), but I can't say is it faster or slower or does it do the job.
