str_replace problem...

sorry to post this...but it's just not working...i'm not really sure what is wrong with this...

$texty=$row_first['text'];
$texty=str_replace("<p>","<p class='newp'>",$texty);
echo $texty;

the data comes out just fine...but it's not converting the tags...

can anybody see an error here?

               "text" => "foo<p>bar");
$texty = $array["text"];
$texty = str_replace("<p>",'<p class="newp">',$texty);
echo "$texty\n";

outputs:
foobar
So are there any marks in the orginal string to replace..?
