user logged in?

I wanted to echo out how many people are on my website right now and also how many registered users are on
I think it is something to do with when they login, update a field such as logged_in to 1 and then to get all logged in people count how many rows have 1 in that field... but what about knowing when to set that field back to 0? How do I know when theyve logged off?
And for the total users online one.. is it something to do with REMOTE_ADDR? Im not really clear on the whole mechanism of how those two work.. so any help is appreciated

I have the very same question, if we check the logged in table, then how would we find out if someone has left the site? Or maybe they don't even click on the log out button. Last night when I was surfing the web, I got this site that you can link to and it shows how many ppl are viewing your page, without any log in thing. It means they can see how many ppl are viewing the site without a login script. Here it's the address:

You can have sessions without logging in. (Well, more like you have a cookie that logs in as a guest)

Users online is merely a guess based on how long ago a user accessed a page.

It displays a link to This site that has a good tutorial for displaying users online in an easy way if you use a mysql-database.

This can easilly be changed to display users that have logged in. Just insert a record to the table that controls users online whenever a user log in...you can of course add a field that chooses to display registred users etc etc etc etc...
