Help Needed - breaking a string

Hi there...

My form has a field which will receive a year in 4 digits, like "1983" for instance...

How can I break it into 4 single digits - 1, 9, 8 and 3, and store each one in its own variable ($dig1, $dig2, $dig3, $dig4)

try this :

$teststring = "1983";
echo $teststring[0]; // will produce first char (1)
echo $teststring[3]; // will produce fourth char (3)

I was trying to install PHP as CGI on a Win 2000 server machine - bad idea - I installed it AS A MODULE and the prob was solved

You can access individual characters in a string in this manner: $date[0], $date[1], $date[2], $date[3], etc. Use strlen() to get the length.

Just a minor correction here:

it is more correct to use braces instead of brackets for the string index.

i.e. use:

$mystr{0}

instead of

$mystr[0]
