search field

I have created a search facility on my site. It takes the value entered into a text box and passes it to the searchresults page which checks field in the database for a match. The problem I have is if you enter a single word the search is fine, however, if you enter multiple words - no results are returned.

The sql code I am using is:

SELECT ID, companyName, outline
FROM tablename
WHERE companyName LIKE '%varName%' OR outline LIKE '%varName%' OR category LIKE '%varName%'

Any ideas?

The search words you've entered have they actually been in the text? A search using LIKE '%microsoft linux%' wouldn't return a result unless there actually in your data entry is a sentence like:

"untill this day microsoft linux cooperation has been a huge succes"

because the thing you are asking it for is to find a wording exactly like the one inside the '% xxx %' what is on the outside can be anything but between the two there needs to be a space...

there are alternatives ... you could do an explode on your searchstring, to find all given searchwords and make a $query that'll incooporate them all....

give a holler if you need more on explode() etc.

Hi there

I have had a look at the strtok() and explode() functions. I have examples of printing the results from text entered but I can't quite fathem how to link it to a database - to search the fields for matching words. Please can you elaborate further.
