Putting items into a list box!

Hey guys and gals,

I'm just wondering how to do 2 simple things. How do I go about using fetch array to insert everything in a databse into a list box? Secondly, how do I make sure a certain item is selescted in the list box when a page is loaded.

Right now I'm trying to put a list of locations into a list box. When the user clicks on edit, they are brought to update.php where the info from that specific record is displayed (including location from the list).

It'd be something like this:

print '<select>';
while (fetch array) {
  print '<option>' . $row['field'] . '</option>\n';
}
print '</select>';

To have one selected, you just have an if statement inside the loop and when the right option comes, you output selected="selected" in the option tag.

Ok, I have this and it doesn't work. Everything comes up perfectly besides the empty list box.

I like echo's rather than print.

echo "<select name=/"location/">";
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { 
    if ( THIS OPTION IS SUPPOSED TO BE SELECTED )
        echo "<option selected>" . $row["location"] . "</option>\n";
    else
        echo "<option>" . $row["location"] . "</option>\n";
    }
echo "</select>"; 

Make sure that mysql_query is actually returning a resource to $result. Be sure you're not supressing errors with @ (at least for now).

Also check to be sure that there is a column "location" being returned in the query.

If this doesn't work, we may need to see more of your actual code.

Ok, right now I'm getting this come up in my $result. Also how do I check if theres anything rows or columns in the query?

simple debugging tool for when the query doesn't work as you think it should:

print $query;

then copy and paste it in phpMyAdmin or the mysql client.
