my brain just isn't working right today... not enough coffee??

i'm trying to generate unique id's and my client doesnt want any of these characters: 0,o,i,l,1 to be in there.

would generating a random set and replacing any occurences of 0,O,I,L,1 with say... "x" or something.. the best way to go about this? it doesnt seem to be...

Create an array of all the valid characters. Generate a random number and use % to get a number <= the number of characters. Then, use a for loop that 1) generates your random number, 2) grabs the character in that position in the array (e.g. array[$rand]), and 3) tacks it onto the end of your password (e.g. $newpass = ""; ... $newpass .= array[$rand]😉.

Simple enough. Or, as you mentioned, you could generate a new password by generating an md5 hash of time() (or something along those lines). Then use ereg_replace() or another regex function to go through and change all the invalid characters to valid ones.

If you wanted an extra coolness to it, get a dictionary file with each word a specific length, eg 5 letters. randomly pick a word and run your replace script over it, so letters like O would become 0, I would become !, A would become @, etc. The words would be rememberable for the user but the password wouldn't be crackable, at least without knowing your combination.

The passwords would be rememberable and harder to crack than, say, password, but they'd still be based on a known word. That makes them less secure than, say, iTtpW!TB3!.
