i use

	session_start();
	session_register('user_login');
	$_SESSION['user_login'] = "this is page 2";

to start the session and set the value but how do i set the length i want the session to be availible for. so after 30 mins it will destroy the session value.

if you want to kill a session after 30 minutes without too much trouble, use cookies

what if cookies arnt enabled which is what i am trying to get around.

then you will have to store the session and the current time in a mysql table for example, then either with a cron job to run a php page, or an include on a frequently visited page to check if 30 minutes has been up yet

so is there no time out function on the sessions?? because i knwo there is on cookies. if not how crap lol

was trying to keep him away from that, but i guess he can give it a try

My experience with that, is it is very buggy, and inconsistent, but you can give it a whirl

yes, it is possible, but that doesn't mean you really know them if you don't have too much experience with them
