Problem with auto_increment primary key

I need to set up my program to re-use ID numbers when entries are deleted.

For example, you enter 4 rows, then go back and delete the 2nd row, and are left with 1/3/4. But when you submit the next row, it goes in as row 5. I need it to fill in the blank at 2 first.

any help would be appreciated.

i'm no MySQL god, so don't take my word as gospel, but it looks as though you may have to assign the id's manually in that case.

i could be very wrong.

I think you might be right. Using the auto_increment, it would make sense that you have no control over what is used for the Id value.

Hopefully Im wrong. 🙂

why is it so important that you reuse vacated ids?

i don't really understand the reason.

The reason I am trying to set it up this way is because it was one of the requirements I was given.

If its not possible, I can take it back to the boss and say so. But if it can be done, I would like to do it that way.

why would anyone request such a thing?
are they afraid to run out of id's?
find out why your man wants that? i can truly think of no reason.

Yeah, I think youre right davey. Ive found a few threads on the subject and they all say its not necessary. Ill just tell him that we wont be able to support that.

You should ask the phpbb.com guys. They did it with code rather than auto in MYSQL.

I want it just because its neater. I like having a neat and tidy site. A nice and tidy DB.
