[Resolved] mod_rewrite problem

hi all, I'm trying to use nice urls, so that the user can type

/cars/sedans/

rather than
/cars/index.php?type=sedan

I need my rewrite rule to say send anything after /cars/ as the variable, UNLESS it is index.php.

My current rule dies, as it doesn't take into account the fact that index.php might be called directly.

Any help is much appreciated.

What's your current expression look like?

RewriteRule ^cars/(.*)/$ cars/index.php?type=$1 [NC]

not tested, but you should be able to call index by /cars/index/ with that rules. the server does not 'look' at following rules after finding a valid one, so the second rule will not be checked anymore.

RewriteRule ^cars/index/$      cars/index.php
RewriteRule ^cars/(.*)/$         cars/index.php?type=$1
