advice on session/cookie use

What I'm looking to do is have 1 variable maintain it's scope throughout the entire site. This variable get's set depending on the entry point to the site. Regardless of what it's set to, I need to make sure that while a visitor is browsing my site this variable maintains its value. My questions is, should I use a cookie for this or use sessions? I"m pretty new to php developmentt so forgive me if this is a very simple question.

seen as the information you are holding is not "valuable" i'd suggest cookies, because they last longer, which could be a good thing if your visitor is very intrigued by your site

The difference is that cookies are stored on the users computer for a certain amount of time (can be set by you). A session is just used while the user is browsing the site. Once the window is closed, the session is no more. Some people disable cookies, so you might be at a disadvantage there.
