I don't know if I can explain this correct!

I wondered, if You wan't a restricted are on a website, what would produce the best security on the Apache server.

htacces by using the build in functions i the apache server
or
pure php/mysql with md5 cryptation.

Do you want authentication, or SSL? Or both?

If you just want to protect your pages using authentication you can use a cookie variable upon successful login which is reviewed by each page.

look into pear.php.net "DB" and "Auth" classes
