content rotator - change every Monday

I'm a new PHP/MySQL guy, looking for some help on showing a "tip of the week" . Tips are in a MySQL database, along with a date that they should start being displayed (which is always a Monday).

A page request mean that I must determine the most recent Monday (or maybe today is Monday) and insert the tip related to that date from the database. If you come visit next week, you'll see a different tip.

Another page will have an archive of tips, but that part is easy!

Any help would be appreciated. I really don't know where to start on this one.

Well, let's see what I can do!

$res = mysql_query("SELECT tips, dates FROM mytable WHERE dates<= NOW() ORDER BY dates DESC LIMIT 1");

This one finds all the dates less than or equl to current date, then sorts them descendingly and only grabs the first one out, i.e. the closest date. How's that?!
