chmod problem for deletes through script

My first post!

I'm writing an FTP type program to allow me to upload, download, delete and rename files on my webspace through HTTP. The reason I'm working on this is the proxy at works prevents FTP access.

So far so good but I've hit my first snag. When I try to delete any file I get "Unlink failed(Permission denied)". I understand that this is to do with my chmod settings and if I set them to 777 I should be okay.

However I am reluctant to set the chmod of ALL my files and folders to 777 (is there a security issue in this?).

Is there any way I can log on as owner within the script to give me full access?

Hopefully I've explained myself okay, any help will be appreciated.

I don't think you need to login as owner, because you can chmod files one at a time like this:

chmod("/dir/dir/your.file.name", 0777);

Don't forget the zero, it almost certainly won't give you the result you expected.

However, if you need to login, you may be interested in the cURL libraries

I've tried adding the chmod like so:

echo chmod($thisDir.$fileName, 0777);

and this gives me:

chmod failed: Operation not permitted

I'll have a look at the cURL libraries you suggested.

[EDIT] Looks like my webspace host has not included the cURL libraries in the build of PHP. 🙁
