[Resolved] installation problem ( sorry i'm thick ) :-)

Hi guys...

I guess you've heard all this before but I would appreciate a bit of help.

I'm totally new to this aspect of web design.

I recently bought a book that had the following software bundled. Apache server v1.3.23; MySQL servers and clients v 3.23.49 and php 4.1.1.

I want to set up an environment where I can learn by using my own computer.

I installed the above software and it all appeared to go well. My first question is this. When I installed Apache it asked for a network domain, server name and administrators e-mail. I made a name up. Is this wrong should I have typed localhost????

The book in question also gave instructions on configuring a file named httpd.conf. I followed these. It also mentioned a file named php.ini. What is this file????

My OS is Windows 98se. The book mentioned that this file and a file named php4ts.dll should be installed into the windows\system folder.I have done this.

I wrote a test script and tried viewing it in IE and all i got was a copy of the source code??

Hope someone can make sense of all this...

Sorry if i've not explained it very well.

Is there anyway of testing if all these components are working.I have a traffic light icon. So i guess MySQL is ok????

All I can suggest is you make sure that apache has started. Also are you referencing your test script via the webserver (http://localhost/testscript.php) and not (c:\program files\apache group\apache\htdocs\testscript.php). Also make sure you place your script in the apache htdocs root.
I think you should also make sure you call your server either localhost or 127.0.0.1 - this is in the your apache config file.

After a few hours of messing I've moved on a little. I've got Apache showing the default page and have altered the conf file. I have also done a test file and placed it in the htdocs folder. I now type http://localhost/test.php and I get a window popping up with download this file or open from its current location.When I click it I get the which program do you want to associate with this type of file. It appears php isnt working???I have mentioned this fact elsewhere and have had a few suggestions how to fix the problem. However if you wish to put your opinion forward it would be much appreciated.

Well it looks like we are in the same boat and I will try to help you as I figure some of this out myself. I have installed this numerous times with apache and mysql but on linux not windows.

For your server name if you are doing this just internal you can use localhost or use your ip address of the server.

Since you got apache running and it loads php without a problem but get asked to download the file instead of view it something is not running. The documentation for running php on windows using apache is horrible. I know both really well but dealing with a windows server is where I lack. If you figure it out let me know and if I get further I will let you know. I did try giving the file extension a php4 and that ran the file but just displayed <?php phpinfo();?>

What it looks like is the php interpreter is not running it.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

Make sure when you add those 3 lines of text to http.conf that you put it AFTER the LAST!! AddModule line

I noticed that when I did a test apache configuration I was getting an error that the module was already loaded so I searched for faq on that. I found that someone else had the same problem running this on win2k with apache.

Now the page runs automatically, also make sure you have the php.exe file set to allow everyone access.

I re-installed everything and though and behold it seems to be working.

I don't know what I did differently but it must have been something really daft. As is normally the case. Now the learning part begins. I HOPE 😃
