activate php script with procmail

Hello all!

Great site, i always find some answers here, thanks.

Now i have something that i couldn't find yet.

I want to fire up a php script (with procmail) whenever an email is delevered to a pop-account. Is this possible? I'm not into procmail and don't know it's possibilities (yet).

Is this a stupid question or is it a hard one that nobody knows?

I would appriciate it greatly if somebody could point me in some direction, i have no clue if it's possible.

I ran this question on a Linux user's group list. The reply I got also answers my question about directing bounced email to a script so it can be processed. Of course, this assumes you are using Linux as your host and have access to the appropriate directories, which might not be the case depending on your hosting provider.

You'll need access to the /etc/aliases file - alternatively you'll need to be able to use procmail or sieve or similar mail processing facilities offered by your host.

There you can pipe email to another program for processing - that program could be your php script as a php shell script.

You'd have something like this in /etc/aliases

run-script: "|/usr/local/sbin/myscript.php"

Then any email to run-script@foo.com will be passed to your myscript.php file - assuming it's executable and you start the script with something like:

#!/usr/bin/php

I will try this as soon as possible.

I think i can "run" procmail "scripts" on my pop accounts, so i surpose it's possible. My host allows me to create my own pop-boxes and aliasses and allows me to run procmail actions on them.

Hopefully it works, i'll get back on it.

Hi again,

This is my .procmailc:

run a program when I get mail

:0
*
| /usr/local/bin/php /opt/usr/handler/HTML/handler.php

That will execute my handler.php script. Now i have another problem: Where has my mail gone? I think procmail passes it to the script, but i don't know how to get the data there (no POST's, no GET's)..

Any idea?

You'll need to use the CLI PHP binary, which should be installed with PHP, so you can pass arguments to your script. Then you get $argc (the argument count) and $argv (the argument array). PHP doc has more info on this.
