help with date

hi there i dont if this is possible but i tried it and it gaves me an error

SELECT  * FROM  `events` WHERE substr( date, 5, 2 ) =  '08'

the reason why im trying that way is that if im going to visit an events site it will just give you the evens on the current month but i dont know how to maybe someone here have done this kind of query
