how to set session.auto_start on my hosting to be off

After my hosting updated php to version 4.3.1.My website does not work.They set session.auto_start=on,but my site wants it to be off.I am using Oscommerce version 2.2 (not ms2).I posted this question in osc forum but get no answer.

setup a .htaccess file, then put:
php_flag session.auto_start Off
in the .htaccess file, make sure this file has a permission of 644
