Coding "metatags" in PHP??

I know how to code "metatags" in HTML and have a sample of how to do the same in PHP, but my three PHP books don't seem to give other examples. There must be another name for metatags in PHP?

Anyway, I need to add lots more of them to my site so search engines can find it. Could someone please send me a sample of how they should be styled/coded and tell me whether there's a max number of words or characters allowed, either by PHP itself or by an average search engine?

Susan, I assume you're talking about meta tags like keyword, description, etc, which are used to help search engines find your site? PHP doesn't have anything to do with those-- they live in the HTML. You can hvae your PHP write out the HTML (like, maybe the tags live in a database), but it doesn't sound like you have a specific need/reason for that.

Hope that helps... if you can tell us exactly why you want to have PHP involved with meta tags (i.e. more details about your eventual goal) can try to help more...

Okay. Please forgive me for not knowing the terminology. I'm learning PHP on the fly -- what I need to do site maintenance.

The "metatags" that are already in my code begin with a:

$keywords =

tag. The words/phrases go on and on, each separated by commas, and the whole phrase ends with a semicolon.

So, I guess I understand that now. Does anyone know how many words/characters can be used?

Susan, no problem. re: how many words/characters, there's not really a limit that you'll hit in PHP (it's like 65,000 characters or something)... and I have no idea what the search engines look for.
