saving a mysql result resource for later use

Hi, i'm trying to figure out how to run a query, get the result of the query through a variable ($res) then saving that variable for later use..

basically I have a large table of data which people can filter through and get their own result sets, i then want other scripts to do statistical analysis of those results..
any ideas short of creating and saving into my own filetype which would be a headache.. also the refine query search option in the script depends on this.

is there any way to do this? i've googled myself to exhaustion looking but there must be some way around it if you cant...
any ideas?

Hi Danny

Are the results that the users get in some short of shape that you could insert them into a MySQL table and then run your analysis script on the contents of the table? You could then delete the contents of the table as and when you please.

thanks for the quick response,
I thought about doing that but basically theres a few problems with doing it that way,
for a start the tables would have to have random names as every user on the site would have the option to save his/her results, also there may be a limit on the number of tables per database on the server we put it on
was hoping that recordsets could be saved as files kinda like phpmyadmin does it but so they can be read back in again as variables and ran through queries again

I dont think you have save results in any way. You cant save it, or transfer it over. I am talking about the actull $result varible you get back from the query

it's just like any other variable

first page

session_start();
$_SESSION['saved_result'] = "";

after you get the result set

$_SESSION['saved_result'] = $result_set_from_query;

other pages

session_start();

$saved_result = $_SESSION['saved_result']

now you can use it however

yeah thats right, unfortunatly you cant save it as a file though or put it in a db for later use in a different page (i.e. not through sessions)
i resolved this by turning the result set into a 3 dimensional array then encoding, serializing and saving it as a downloadable file to be uploaded when anyone wants to do another search with the data

I was going to suggest dumping the rows to an array myself... other than that I dont think you can do it any other way...
