sorting code

i posted this in the newb board, but and only after saw a section specifically for coding. so, i am looking for a script to allow users to have a drop down menu where they can sort files alphabetically, by most popular, date added, last download, etc. i am so confused. i have not tried anything, actually.. i have just been reading random code scripts on-line. i use php4, with MySQL on an Apache Web Server using e107.org as my CMS. If a code like this cannot be generated, is there at least a code to sort them alphabetically?

If you are storing the info in a DB the SQL will be able to sort it by whichever column you choose.

e.g.
SELECT from table ORDER BY date
or
SELECT from table ORDER BY name
