alright.....i want to start my own website. nice big forums and everything. i heard php was the way to go. only thing is i have very little computer history. never did my own site except for the ones you can do in aol.....you know, the ones where you select the color of text and background, type what you want then your done. i found this page in my fight to make my own site. ive heard of the mysql, the apche, and a bunch of other crap i dont understand. i want to learn what those are and how they come into play with me making a website. im posting here for some help. maybe someone out their can teach me or knows where to send me to learn. help would be greatly appriciated. keep in mind, im beyond any newb you have ever interacted with so keep it simple.

The path from where you seem to stand and to building an advanced PHP-Site with forums etc. by yourself is quite long, but it's not impossible and I guess you'll have a lot of fun along the way.

First of all, I would suggest you learn some basic HTML(Hypertext Markup Language): Introduction to HTML .

For PHP-learning, I suggest you use the php.net's tutorial first: http://www.php.net/tut.php.

I don't thing Apache is the first thing you should get into, but their site is here: apache.org

And, at last but not at least, keep posting the newbie forum while you make your way through the jungle.

am i gonna need to get a domain name and host to just mess around with php. cuase i want to use trial and error and i would like to do that without spending money at first

No, you don't NEED a host, to test it on your local machine you'll need to install IIS and PHP I suppose. (I use Mac so I can't help there though.)

On Mac its sooo easy to setup PHP and test it out. 🆒

I test my php-site on my computer without being connected to the internet or without IIS. You can download the files in this folder I made for you. The PHP 4.2.X installer will install PHP on your computer and you will be able to run your files in explorer/netscape without beeing connected. You can set the path to your "root"-directory(web) to anything you want(I believe that http://localhost/ is default(C:\www\ or something - se documentation).
