form fields

i am creating a form that I would like to check values to make sure there is some sort of input that is not just a space or 5 spaces or 20 spaces or whatever. some letter or number combination.

also, is there a good tutorial on how to prevent sql queries from being put into form fields?

Actually, I guess that should be [man]addslashes/man, not [man]stripslashes/man ... :o
