Variables in regular expressions

Alright here's my code snippet:

for ($x=0; $x <= $ltrNum; $x++){
if (eregi("[".$ltrsVar{$x}."]", $tmpChk)){
$test = $test + 1;
}
}
what I am trying to do is detect whether letters in a string ($ltrsVar) are found within $tmpChk (which changes dynamically via a loop which is assigned a value via an item from a recordset). It is an attempt to determine if a series of letters ($ltrsVar) comprise a word ($tmpChk)

This will only search one letter at a time.
Is this what you are expecting.
Echo out your eregi search string and you will see what is happening.

Yes, I only want it to just check for the existence of the letter in the string, but I get an error also, (which should have detailed in the previous post)

Line 33 happens to be the line of code I submitted with the eregi statement.
