username required to download

I have files on my site in which I want to allow certain people to download. I will send them a link that links directly to the file for downloading. When they click the link, I need a requirement for them to enter a username and password to download the specific file.

Project #2... When they enter the username and password, I need an email sent to me letting me know the day and the time that the specific user downloaded the specific file.

Any idea where to start on this?

I agree there is no need for that negativity there cyclops. Notice he said any "IDEAS"? He wasn't asking for a fully functional script or anything.

second, the question asked is so lame, from which you can tell the author hasn't looked around yet, IMHO the poster is lazy, and does not deserve a proper answer

You know dude.. I doubt if you have many friends at all. A friend knows how to respond to someone in need even if it is a stranger. Maybe your response should have been,

"Sorry, but you have posted in the wrong section. Please try the Newbees section or General Help. I hope you find your answer there. Best wishes."

I wonder how many people dogged on you when you were in need of help. You know what?? I would wish a curse on you for your hatefullness but instead I am going to ask God to bless you and overlook your ingnorance.

I would stick the files in a database instead of hanging them out there on the file system.

Then I would write a script that when first called displays a username and password box.

When the username and password are entered it will attempt to log the person in.

Once the person is logged in it will send the file down to the user using http headers to ensure that the file is received properly.

There are turoials for this on the web, but they are not easy to find it took me about 3/4 of a day of searching to find a couple of good ones that I could mine for ideas.

I agree with your post except for this bit. If I've got the option, I'd continue to store the files in the filesystem instead of using the database for a filesystem, and just store filenames in the database. Much more efficient for the OS, the DBMS, and PHP when it comes to consumption of resources (including memory, time, and connections), and ease of implementation.

To prevent people using a URL to get at the files directly, I'd just put them outside the site directory tree. If that's not an option, then a decent server should allow you to deny access to certain directories even within the tree.

Part 2 of the project is very simple: putting a suitable call to the mail() function at an appropriate spot in the download script (i.e., immediately before or after the lines wherein the file is served up).
