sending partial page to the browser

I have a very time consuming function, that warrants a non pop-up status bar. Is there a way to send part of a page to the browser, then have the rest displayed when the processing is complete?

I started toying with the output buffer, but I couldn't get that to work well. Perhaps somone has experienced this before and could suggest a solution.
