Poss Silly question

Right my third day with php so bear with me, sql is ok.
Now I am building a share trading programme for the scholl I work for.

I need to differentiate between users on the site, so that I can keep track of there "earnings"

any ideas?
I thought of session vars but am not sure

Sessions or cookies... but not everyone uses cookies.... so sessions is the better way.... 😉
