Change Dem' Filenames

So, yeah, i should know this, or i should look it up, but im kinda in a time constraint so i need some help.

Let me describe the situation.

When users upload files i want to be able to change the name so that when my file lists start getting up into the thousands i wont have to worry about duplicate names.

So i guess my question is: How do i change the name of a file on upload? 😕

ummm don't you either move_uploaded_file or copy_uploaded_file?

I'm pretty sure (expecially since the manual agrees with me see: http://us3.php.net/manual/en/function.move-uploaded-file.php) that you give it a file name when you do this.

So what exactly are you asking for help with again?

	$file = $uploaddir . "image" . $row[0] . $ext;
	$thumb = $uploaddir . "thumb" . $row[0] . $gif;
	move_uploaded_file($_FILES['userfile']['tmp_name'], $file);
	$success = 1;
        }

That's how I do. They all get renamed to image##.ext. I get the number from the record's id in the database ($row[0]). Of course, there are some mysql queries before this stuff, but I wont go into all that unless you need it.

That will let you move the file to wherever you want, but i need to know how to rename it, i think my best bet is to upload it and then go back and rename it all in the same script, that way it dosent take time and space to process it.

when you specify destination you can stick a filename in there, actually I think you have to stick a file name in there. That will rename the file.

yes it will, it is just like you are creating a new file out of an old one

if you are uploading thisisatest.gif and you use move_uploaded_file, you can call it stolzyboy.exe if you really want to, of course it won't work, but whatever you call it in the function is what it will be called

Mine doesn't just move the file. It creates a file name based on the record's id in the database. See where I have $file = $uploaddir . "image" . $row[0] . $ext; followed my move_uploaded_file($_FILES['userfile']['tmp_name'],$file);?GUARANTEED a unique image name...
