Dynamic links

I dont know exactly how to do this so I was wondering if there is a tutoiral or an easy example sombody could give me.

I want 1 page to display member profiles. How would I make it so when the link is clicked it queries my MYSQL db with that user by name. Does my Name feild have to be a primary?

Say I have 3 names

John
Joe
Nick

I only want to display Johns information when John is clicked. I have a general idea of how to do it I just need a little help.

When you query the database for the usernames, get their ID also (if they don't have one, add a field for one). So then the link would go something like <a href="member.php?id=<? echo $id; ?>">John</a> Then on member.php, get the ID and query the database for all the information under that ID.
