"on-the-fly" personalisation of HTML mails ??

I have the following problem. I'm building a website were people can registrate to different leaflets. Every week each subscriber should get a personalised email with links (thumbnails) to the leaflets that are updated. So when buidling the email it should not only look the recipient's name and email adres but also which leaflets she or he subscribed to and which to include in the mail (only the updated ones). Because such a mailing script would take ages to run I wondered if I could mail the recipients a HTML mail were a PHP-page is included, if that could work I only have to look up the recipients-id in the database.

So the idea is like with a HTML mail containing images that are located on the webserver that is also containes PHP code that is on the webserver. When a subscriber opens the html mail, the php code runs and gets all the needed information from the database using only the recipients id, in that way the subscriber gets a personlised html mail but the personalisation happens "on-the-fly" and not when the mail is sent (this is not entirely true because we still have to sent the recipients_id along with the mail but I hope you understand what I mean)

Can this work and is there somebody that has already done it?

I've done something like that a while ago.
The problem that i had was that some mailclients didn't interpret the stuff right, though i have forgotten the exact problem we had...

However, we decided after some testing to send people a link to a website, which worked fine.

Actually most people didnt even realize that we had sent them the link because they moreless automatically clicked it and got on our site...

well.
i'd consider it since you rule out the mailclient as source of mischief this way.
