What other web development languages do people know?

Ok, we all know (or kinda know) PHP here, some know ASP, but I'd like to know the actual figures (and I think it'll annoy Moonglobe somewhat 😃 ).
So, the list so far is (and this will be updated as and when I can persuade any mod who ahppens to be on the board the time (sorry guys)):

PHP
ASP VBScript
ASP JavaScript
ASP.NET C#
ASP.NET VB
JSP
Perl
Cold Fusion

Please note that I have not included ASP PerlScript (yes it is possible) because I've never heard of anyone who uses it.

Oh, and remember theres a max of 10 choices for a poll...

I've had to mess with it on occasion. Definitely NOT my cup of tea, however.

Only PHP, don't know much of anything else because I don't want to learn it...waste of time in my opinion...although probably not in yours.

Merve knows:
HTML, JavaScript, PHP, CSS, a very tiny bit of XML, a very tiny bit of Visual Basic, a very tiny bit of Pascal, and a very tiny bit of Flash Action Script (who really cares about that one)...

Anyway, my head is bursting with information that I will probably never use later on in life...what's the point for a guy like me?

Hmmm,
8 little (indians) choices for a poll.

1 is Microsoft, i can't (don't want) buy it,

I used to be a clipper programmer, then I went to college for comp sci and became a computer programmer. Knowing different languages is good. You've got to choose the best tool for the job and that's not always php.

however, i agree with you, but talking about "web development languages"...

The JAVA sell as brand new, a technology embedded on c64 and zx spectrum, just an interpreter. And don't forgive that the VisualBasic too in the same years back to the top for the new interesting to portability of interpreted languages, now supported from powerfull processor (z80 vs pentiumII, there isn't game)....

The Microsoft sell and stop. :p
First investing on VisualBasic on swarm of interesting for interpreted language, then, when programming businnes move on internet, delete every developement project of new VB, and do the C# and .NET. And it's the same SMOKE!

yes, but I've done some web development that was much better done in C then in php. The only reason I've ever done this is speed or the algorithm being interpreted breaking down security.

For example:
I have two tables fileInfo and fileData.

fileInfo holds all the information about the files and fileData holds the actualy files.

now I don't want someone who hacks into the database to be able to rebuild the files so I instead of a foreign key I use a mathematical function to generate a list of off sets and use those offsets for the keys in fileData that relate to fileInfo.

If I stick that algorithm in a php file then all a hacker has to do is break the file system security and they can rebuild the files in fileData and match them to fileInfo, OTOH if I use C then the person does not have access to my algorithm hanging out in a text file.

But what if you make any PHP extension in C and put this function in it ? If any hack can read in PHP libs made in C, can read in C program too...

PHP is free-style and ON THE WEB you can do any thing in any way.

which is why I would do it as a stand alone app and call it with exec in a seriously obfuscated manor and give it a name that looked like it did something else and in reality it would do something else and also create the list of numbers to use.

I agree; the only reason I had to learn Cold Fusion was because I've had the occasional job to translate a CF site into PHP.

why it's not like it matters......... 14 votes, 14 votes for PHP. i guess the percentages would have ben more accurate, but you can just judge by the absolute #.

Nah, the percentages can't be any more accurate than the totals to begin with (can't create information that's not there), but the problem is that they measure what proportion of votes were for each language out of the total number of votes cast for all languages - not the number of voters. Let's say fourteen people voted and they all voted for PHP. Why would the percentage be <40% instead of 100%?
