REPLACING Dividers / Repeats

Does anyone know how to find repeats of a character and removing them?

Basically, I want to remove these characters that are used as dividers. Counting Insances over 10 or more in a row.

Example 1: ======================
Example 2: ---------------------------------------
Example 3: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Regular expressions would be good for this:

www.php.net/eregi_replace
www.php.net/preg_replace

You could also just walk through the entire character list of the file, keep a $counter of how many of the same character you've found in a row...
