header("Content-type: image/jpeg") creates a red x in mac IE

i have a thumbnail script I'm calling like
<img src="image.php?photo=testimage.jpg">

which returns a thumbnail in every browser tested except mac ie, I can only assume outputing header("Content-type: image/jpeg") inside image.php isn't working or isn't enough.

Please help.
