File works ok in NS but not in IE

Hi everyone,

The file below works great in Netscape but just not in IE. (I always thought IE was the more forgiving of the two browsers).

I just don't have any idea where the problem is with the php and why it would work in one browser and not another. This page did work in both browsers as html and javascript but now as its converted to php, it will no longer work in IE.

I put a .txt version of all the associated php files in this directory, so to see any associated php files, just use the same name with a .txt extension.

What is this END_HTML stuff? Isn't that a Perl command? To end PHP, you have to use ?> and then you can use straight HTML, or you stay in PHP and use print() or echo() statements for the HTML.

Or have I just got completely the wrong end of the stick?

Hi Norman,

Thanks for the reply.

I passed your comments to my webmaster (he's the one actually doing the php part and not me). He insists its a legitimate php script and that he's used it elsewhere with no problems. I hope he's right, because he's sure spent an awful lot of time trying to get this to work.

hi weedpacket,

There are two errors that come up with Internet Explorer but not in Netscape. It happens with both my IE5.5 and my webmasters IE6.

The two errors are reproduced as accurately as possible here:

A Runtime Error has occured
Do You Wish to Debug?
Line: 8
Error: Unterminated string constant
yes no

Then, regardless if you click yes or no to that error alert, the following error comes up:

Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet Site:
http://www.thebatteryshoppe.com/TestDir2/DIR3/index.php
Operation Aborted
ok

There is then no choice but to click "ok" which closes the entire browser window.

But as I said, it works great in Netscape. Any ideas what is being done wrong or what can be changed so it runs in IE too?

Well, that's presumably a Javascript error, unless the javascript is being written by a buggy PHP script. According to Mozilla's javascript console, the error is on line 9 of index.php. Around there I see:

Not to rain on your parade, but the same errors do occur in Netscape/Mozilla.

Javascript errors reported on Lines 9 and 40 ...

if you view the page and select view source, in notepad (or other editor) goto those lines and surrounding lines to investigate.

hi Spankie,

What version of Netscape/Mozilla did you test it with? I just installed Netscape6.2.1 on my PC and the file loads and executes as I expect it should with no errors using my Netscape browser, but crashes with IE5.5 or IE6.0.
