Creating a Session

I have to create a session after some one logs in to my login script. I know you have to make the cookie or session before any html content is displayed, and before the headers are sent. so what would be the best way of doing this?

Idea 1: Creating a page that loads as soon as you login with a "Meta Refresh" this page will contain only the information needed to create the cookie. (I think this is a rubbish way of doing it but it is the only idea i have)
