Folder access

Sorry if this is off topic for echo lounge.

How do I stop someone being able to type the url to one of my directories, say www\etc\JPEG\ ?
I want them to be able to type www\etc to get to my site, and that page will reference and display JPEGs that are in the JPEG directory, but people shouldn't be able to open the JPEG directory by iitself..?

you can't unless you put it outside the doc root. you culd give it a xx0 permission status, which would throw a 403 frobidden error if they try to access it..... that's the only thing i can think of
