Server Timeout Issue

I'm having some issues with my server timing out (if that is the correct term for this). On certain pages where a lot of database querying or payment processing occurs, the browser will keep loading and loading. The page completes all of it's tasks (the payments are indeed processed) but the confirmation page never comes up.

As a test I set up a simple page which sleeps for a period of time before displaying a simple html page. It works fine up until about 25-30 seconds, where I start to have the same problem of the browser continually loading and no page ever popping up.

I've changed both the max_execution_time variable in php.ini and the server timeout variable in httpd.conf to upwards of 600 seconds with little improvement.

Is there another variable I'm missing which needs to be changed?

Are you sure you don't have an endless loop somewhere in the code?

Maybe it's trying to open a socket and can't, but the timeout is longer than the browser time out?

If it was the max_exec time then you'd get an error on the page.

Another thing that might be happening is, if you're processing to a gateway, the gateway might not be sending the same confirmation that the script is waiting for?

I'm taking shots in the dark, but no one seems to have any other/better ideas, so maybe these will help.

there's definitely no endless loop - the page in question actually works some of the time (i'm guessing because the server is experiencing less traffic at those times).

i don't think i'm using a gateway, but i'm not really sure what that is. the server is running apache, php w/zend, mysql. nothing special.

my two thoughts are - maybe zend has something to do with it or maybe the server itself is messed up in some way (a bad processor perhaps?!?)

i'm pretty frustrated so if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

How would Zend have anything to do with it? Gazillions of people are working in PHP. Or are you saying it's a PHP bug?

I'd suggest that you time the script. Basically, you record the time at the very head of the document, then at the end and then echo the time it took to parse the page. If that's rediculously long, then start moving the end point up towards the top until you find the culprit. If the parsing of the page only took a few milliseconds, or at least under a second, but you didn't get the page until 20 seconds later or so, it's probably best to contact your admins as it's prob a server side issue. Be sure to check the tracert as well, google will explain what I mean.

I'm sorry, I'm kinda in a rush, I have to fly out to San Jose in a few hours -- I'm here trying to run through all the replies before I start packing, or I'd write something up. I think there's a script in the snippets section that will help.

I'm not saying it's a PHP bug... I just thought maybe there was a Zend configuration variable or something which might solve my problem. I'm getting desperate here!

I can't time the page because the page never loads. I'm going to bite the bullet and get some paid support from my server company on this issue.

Then kill the page in strategic spots, while recording the time.
