Connecting to PG using sockets

In eclipse's PgDatabase class, it says if you use a blank host name it'll connect to PostgreSQL using sockets, rather than a network connection. There's no mention about this in php's docs - a comment suggests you need to set it up in pg_hba.conf.

I've been using 'localhost' for host in pg_connect - which required setting tcpip_socket = true in postgresql.conf to work.

Sooo...I guess I'm not connecting using sockets. How do I? Is performance much better?

Actually, the top page of the postgresql documentation on PHP contains the info you seek, even if it isn't that plain. It's the part where they show postmaster started with or without a -i switch in a table.

Anyway, I've never noticed much difference in performance of unix domain sockets over TCP/IP sockets.
