Probably because you were using imagecopyresized in GDlib2 instead of imagecopyresampled or imagecreate instead of imagecreatetruecolor and were therefore trying to force a truecolour image into a 256-colour palette. You're not the first person on these forums to have this issue.
You're also not the first person to ask if there are other methods. The usual answer given is to use imagemagick instead. (Following which the usual answer is to search the forums for yourself).
