register globals troubles

i have installed phpdev5 which includes apache 1.3.something and php 4.2.1

I read that the register globals was defaultly turned off, me being the sloppy programmer I am went to change register globals back on and it was already on!! However it doesnt appear to be working in my php?

Can anyone help me out?
Using Windows XP Professional
Using php.ini in C:\WINNT

hahah i found a good way to over come this

extract($THE_ARRAY)

All the elements go into seperate variables. Works great 😃
