Heya.

I have an idea, I'm currently too busy, but its something I want that will answer a lot of my website desires.

I want to write a PHP routine(s) to dynamically create animated gifs for my site. I should probably use GD as I have had a lot of success in my static images with it.

Thing is, I do not know how to create animated gifs anyway.

I'm after any advice on this from charitable gurus everywhere.

Thing is, the gifs would have to be optimized as good as the standard gif animations you get, so I guess I would have to write the whole thing. I think it would be a great technology.

Nice idea, but the GIF format is copyrighted 🙁 ... if I'm not mistaken, that's why the GD library doesn't support GIF output.

ImageGif() is available in older versions of GD.

The gif patent has actually expired in the US, rest of world to follow in one year.

GD plans to resume gif support in 2004:

Does anyone here know what the next step is to creating an animated gif from having a sequence of five gifs you want to animate?

If nots animated Gifs, then MNGs..

animated gifs if you open them in Adobe Imageready look like a column of pics, stacked top to bottom, with the same height/width for each one so basically for a pic this size:

Muchas Gracias CSNY. That's a big file. What is the software called that I need to buy for this? I'm still a bit green with web development.

I was just thinking, the end result of this ImageMagic (?)/C++ code, if it doesn't matter how the end result is created, as long as it is the same, could it not be imitated/constructed using PHP?
Is that what you were getting at with the link? It will take a while to get to grips with all that info. Cheers

imagemagick must be installed on your server to use it.
one way you can run it from php is using exec()...

an example from php.net:
to rotate an image 90 degrees in imagemagic which is in c:\imagemagic
on a file image36.jpg
in f:\wwwroot\web\images\gallery3
you would write

$command="C:\\imagemagick\\convert -rotate 90
f:\\wwwroot\\web\\images\\gallery3\\image36.jpg
f:\\\wwwroot\\web\\images\\gallery3\\image36.jpg";
