formatting textarea

I've noticed that the below doesn't seem to always work...What the actual proper way to do the same?

are you hitting tab, then you could try

$comments = str_replace("\t","     ",$comments);

I'm just hitting the return/enter key to start a new line...which should start a new indented line...
No luck yet...

Mine works...but when the user goes back and edits the textarea, then it ignores my code like it's not there and displays everything as one paragraph...

I'm about to try the below but would like to know my options. Thanks

Well, that didn't work...My initial code works fine except when the user goes back a page and re-edits the textarea...Hmm

I think when you remove the NL's the textarea formatting uses simple word wrap. When you bring up the form again the original space indentation is ignored.

Have you tried replacing "\n" with "\n " (NL followed by spaces)?

I've ended up using a little of all...but I think some other code was actually conflicting with my initial code.
