Great article! It really covered what I wanted to know.

Sadly, it still doesn't convince me to use Dreamweaver, I don't know if I'm missing out. This is because I am not a web developer, merely a sort of um...hobbyist...you get the point.

BTW, I just noticed your post count was 888...hehehehe

i hate 2004, ive never gotten so many script errors in my life with 2003. these script errors are from the gui and not the browser, im sticking with 2003, error free.

Use Notepad then...complete control over everything.

I have used Dreamweaver MX ever since it came out and it is superior to it's predecessor.

I like the new 2004. Dreamweaver is: notepad with colourcoding (code panel), FTP (file panel), a code library/reference (code panel) and a WYSIWYG editor (design panel) and more all in one.

What are my impressions of 2004? It's more like the previous release but with a new GUI, better icons and a few bug fixes. There are some new features (ASP, etc) but nothing out of the ordinary that I could remember off the top of my head.

EDIT: I just realised that 2004 also supports RTF to HTML, meaning that you can copy text out of an Office document and paste it into Dreamweaver without losing basic formatting such as bold/italic, etc. This is invaluable when your boss sends you updates to a site in RTF format.

Another nice feature of Dreamweaver (not sure if this is just now in 2004 or was in regular MX) is setting your HTML documents to "Make XHTML compliant" so when you close a tag such as <img it will automagically do /> for you(it also adds the necessary DTD and such for you, which is nice).

I've used DWMX 2004 for a few months now. I can say that it is chock full of bugs. It uses some sort of scripting system, and if that errors it can cause a full crash of the application. The PHP support is pointless to say the least. The 'live' link is basically just an embedded browser. I would never write PHP with it, PHPEclipse is way better (as I'm sure is Zend Studio).

Having said all that, DWMX 2004 blows away the competition when it comes to building webpages. Fantastic control of HTML, CSS, Flash, file management, website management. It can do regular expression matching and replacing across a whole website (very very handy if you work with static sites). The local/remote ability is great for working between Windows and Unix (which I do every day). Also the Macromedia extension library is very good.

And to think I used to use Frontpage. Shudder.

And you admit this in public? 😉

For those who haven't heard, Dreamweaver MX 2004 was released today. Elizabeth, your friendly Dreamweaver forum mod, did a review of the new version. It can be found here:

We'd also like to hear what you think of the new version.

                          Such a very amazing link!

i appreciate your article and post, but the currently running cs4 dreamweaver is doing a nice job in the market and it's really a user friendly to use it.
