Query db and remove one record from the returned result

I have simple db which writers submit their articles, the latest 4 articles are displayed on the home page, and the rest are archived which allows people to cycle trough them, now that I have been playing with php for few weeks I thought I would tweak things just a bit so I can flex my newly found limited knowledge of php, so I added include file in the main page so when people click onto an article at the bottom of the full article it will say something like "this writer also wrote the following articles" which gives them a list of that writers articles and this works fine, but there's just a little problem the script is not clever enough to remove the current article from the list, and predictably my question is how do I do that ?

Well, the id of the current article should be noted, then when the select query should select all articles by the author except for the one which matches the id of the current article.

This is exactly what I want to do, and I think know enough php to check the ID with the new query, but how do I remove only that ID and the corresponding record from the returned array.

I compared the two arrays and then destroyed the identical one, but I'm not sure if this is the best way to do it, or if I will run into any problems by doing it this way in the future when these writers might have dozens of articles in the db
