Image Manipulation

I am builing a site that allows you to upload images through php. that is all fine, but i need to resize the images when they are displayed, so that you get a thumb nail. Now i dont know what host the person i am doing this for will use, but lets assume that it is a linux with php / mysql etc... how is it possible to resize / resample the images with out using extra graphice libraries???

you will need the gd libraries if you want to do image manipulation with php

latest versions of php come with gd straight out of the box so you
wil not need to add any further graphic libraries here
