I think I have gotton myself in a bit of a mess with Linux. I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to the Linux operating system and installed it to try out a samba server.

My dabbling has been quite successful up until now. I want to install PHP, Mysql and Apache on and also upgrade Samba, becuase I have heard it has a pretty nasty bug in it.

The thing is, no C compilers were installed with Linux and I cannot compile anything. I thought that wasn't to bad because I can always download GCC and install it. But - Guess What !!! It needs a little program called 'cc' to install.

Does anyone have any suggestions or who can point me in the right direction?

so you can't do a make, make install, configure... on your server

if you can do those, check out the sticky's at the top of this forum, there are links to help you install php and mysql

On everything I've tried so far. make, make-install and configure have all complained about there being no C compiler and terminated.

What kind of Linux distribution (Redhat, Mandrake, etc) are you using ? I'm quite surprised if any of the mainstream distros do not provide even C compiler as a very bare minimum.

If it's really your case where you really don't have any C compiler, ditch your current Linux distribution altogether, and get some other mainstream ones.

I have RedHat 9 installed as a server. Fortunatly I found an rpm on one of the distribution CD's which enabled me to install GCC. After installing loads of dependancies.

I am not sure why it was not installed by default but for some reason a lot of programs were missing. I had to install vi off an rpm too.

I finally compiled Apcahe and it appears to be working fine. Now to compile MySql and PHP and I'll be happy. I still have a lot of learning to do at the moment. so expect to see a few more questions. 🙂

Hmm, that's kinda odd, gcc was not installed by default ???!! Also, vim is the standard text editor on RH replacing vi as the traditional standard Unix editor which is always installed by default. If you go with default install, if I remember correctly from the old days I played with RH, it installed a LOT of things by default, web server, mysql, php, and lots of other unused stuffs which I later had to deinstall.

Anyways, glad things worked out for you.
