.htaccess or htaccess, why?

Hi,
When I try to run this particuliar script on my local server, for offline line testing, I receive a Internal Server Error message.
However, when I remove the dot or concatination from the (.)htaccess file, problem is solved and the script works.
Can anyone tell me why this is and will it affect my script in any way?

php4.2.3
Mysql4
Apache 1.3.27

Maybe be totally wrong here but I think it has to do with Windows....I didn't even know that Windows supported .htaccess....any how I don't believe Windows supports and the .xxxxx without a filename in front. Again could be totally wrong but I think it is a Windows thing.
