how to restore a mySQL back up files

hello
i finished set up my server with MySQL server as well as others requirement
When i tried to restore a back up to a database whose name is ktcn
i typed this command:
mysql -u user -p ktcn <pathto backup.sql...
howerver...it is an error..."MySQL has gone"
what does this mean?
can anyone help me?

Error in backup file probably - check for unescaped quotes throwing off the restore. Is it local?

Did u mean that the file had error itself??/
THis file was downloaded from Net with extension ZIP then I unzip and used as a backup files *.sql
What can i do to fix this error
