If a remote web page is unaccessable for some reason the time taken to reply to my PHP progam takes forever.
Is there any way to shorten this time lag.
I use:
$file = fopen ("$si_http", "rb");
to access the page.

Hmm, you might trying using [man]stream_set_timeout/man, but I don't know for sure that it'll do what you want ...
