passing variables with slashes - how do I prevent adding multiple slashes?

I have 3 forms that pass a variable.

When it passes the variable with an apostrophe (i.e. "bob's place"), it is putting a slash in (bob\'s place). HOWEVER, everytime it passes the variable to another page (i.e. through a URL, it puts in ANOTHER slash in (bob\'s place --> bob\\'s place),etc.

Is there an way I can pass it along without it adding any more slashes?

I know how to use addslashes and stripslashes. I am hoping there is another way.....
